"My Wi-Fi is down."
No it isn't.

I've lost count of how many times I've heard this. Someone calls in, says the Wi-Fi's down, nothing's working. We check. The Wi-Fi is sitting there, perfectly fine, doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The problem is somewhere else entirely — it always is.

It's not your fault for thinking that way. The router is the thing you can see, the thing you restart when the internet stops, the thing sitting on the shelf blinking at you. So it gets the blame. But Wi-Fi is just the wireless signal inside your home or office — the radio wave that gets your phone or laptop talking to your router. That's the whole job. Wi-Fi doesn't touch the internet. It only knows what's happening inside your four walls.

What connects you to the internet is your ISP — your Internet Service Provider. Openserve, Vumatel, Rain, Vodacom, MTN — those are ISPs. And that is a completely different thing to Wi-Fi.

Fibre, LTE, satellite — let's sort out what's what

Your ISP gets internet to your building one of three ways.

Fibre is a physical cable — glass or plastic — running from your premises to the ISP's network. Data moves through it as pulses of light. Fast, stable, consistent. When people talk about their "100Mbps line," the fibre is what they mean.

LTE or 5G is essentially your phone's mobile data connection, scaled up to your home or office. Your router talks to a cell tower using radio signals instead of a cable. No digging required, which is convenient — but you're sharing that tower with everyone else nearby. When the whole neighbourhood is streaming on a Friday evening, you all feel it together.

Satellite internet uses a dish at your property to communicate with satellites overhead. It's improved significantly in recent years. Still weather-sensitive, still a higher upfront cost on the hardware. But for areas where fibre isn't an option and mobile signal is patchy, it's a genuine alternative.

Three completely different technologies. Three completely different ways of getting internet through your door. None of them are Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi only kicks in once the internet is already inside the building.

So why does a fast line feel slow?

Here's something your ISP is unlikely to explain to you unprompted.

When you sign up for 100Mbps uncapped, you are not getting 100 megabits dedicated to you alone, around the clock. You're getting access to a shared pool. The ISP has a finite amount of capacity coming into their network, and they sell it to far more customers than the network can physically serve at full speed at the same time. The maths works because most people aren't hammering their connection at exactly the same moment.

This is called contention — and it's completely standard practice. Think of a water pipe serving a whole suburb. It's sized for normal usage, not for every household running taps flat out simultaneously. ISPs work the same way. The problem is nobody tells you this when you sign up.

On top of that, most ISPs practise something called traffic shaping. They deliberately throttle certain types of data — streaming, gaming, large downloads — to manage load across the network. It doesn't go in the brochure. But if you've ever noticed Netflix struggling at 7pm while your email loads just fine, there's a good chance shaping is involved.

Why South Africa specifically has it harder

This is where things get a bit more uncomfortable.

Almost everything South Africans use online — streaming, social media, cloud services, Google, all of it — lives on servers in America or Europe. Every time you open YouTube or pull up a shared document, that data travels from there to here and back. Undersea cables. Thousands of kilometres each way.

Those cables cost an enormous amount of money to build, maintain and operate. The capacity on them gets sold in bulk to ISPs and wholesalers. Because South Africa is so far from where most of the world's content sits, we pay significantly more per unit of international bandwidth than countries closer to the source. A 100Mbps fibre plan in the UK costs a fraction of the equivalent here — not because British ISPs are cleverer, but because their traffic doesn't have to cross an ocean first.

So South African ISPs are caught between two uncomfortable realities. Bandwidth is expensive to buy. Customers expect pricing that at least roughly compares to what people pay internationally. The way they square that circle is by over-sweating what they have — selling more capacity than they own outright, banking on the spread of usage across different times of day.

Most of the time it works well enough. Three in the morning, you'll likely see great speeds. Six on a Friday evening — different story. That drop isn't your router. It isn't your Wi-Fi. It's the reality of shared infrastructure in a country that pays a serious premium to stay connected to the rest of the world.

What you can do about it

Knowing this won't fix anything on its own. But it does change how you approach the problem.

Pick your ISP with some scrutiny. Not all of them pile customers onto the same pipe at the same ratio. Generally, cheaper means more contention. Business-grade services cost more and carry better guarantees — because businesses actually can't afford to go offline when it matters.

If you can run two connections, do it. Fibre plus LTE, for example. Bond them together and you get more total capacity, and you stay online when one drops. Next time the internet plays up, check the basics. Is the router light on? Can other devices connect? If the Wi-Fi is up — the problem is further upstream. Log a fault with your ISP. And while you're at it, ask them about their contention ratios. The fact that most don't publish that number says something on its own.
