Why your Wi-Fi works fine in the lounge
but gives up in the bedroom.

Full bars on the couch, nothing down the passage. It's the most common complaint we hear — and it's almost never the internet's fault.

Almost every call we get starts the same way. The Wi-Fi is perfect where the router is. Walk to the back bedroom, or upstairs, or out to the patio, and it falls apart. People assume they've been sold a bad line, and they haven't. The line is usually fine. It's the last ten metres, inside the house, where things go wrong.

Here's the bit most people never get told: your router is a radio, and radio signal is a physical thing that gets worn down by whatever it has to pass through. Every wall takes a bite out of it. South African homes are particularly brutal in this regard, because we build with brick and concrete rather than the timber and drywall a lot of imported networking gear was designed around. Add face brick, a concrete slab between floors, a bit of foil-backed insulation in the ceiling, tiles, a mirror or two, and by the time the signal reaches the far bedroom there's hardly anything left of it.

Distance does the rest. Signal weakens the further it travels, and if your router sits where the fibre happened to be installed — usually a corner of the lounge, or worse, inside a cupboard in the garage — then half its range is being fired out into the driveway. The router isn't broken. It's just in a bad spot, doing its best from the wrong end of the house.

Then there's everything competing for the same airspace. Your neighbours' networks, a microwave, a baby monitor, a Bluetooth speaker, the geyser timer. In a complex or an estate you might have twenty networks stacked on top of each other, all shouting over one another. Your phone can be showing two bars and still crawl, because the signal is arriving but the channel is too congested to carry much through it.

And a weak connection costs more than just speed. When your phone or laptop is barely holding on, it keeps resending what didn't get through, dropping and reconnecting, hunting for something better. Video calls stutter, streams drop resolution, downloads stall halfway. If the Wi-Fi gives up entirely, your phone quietly falls back to mobile data, which is how people end up burning through an expensive bundle while sitting at home.

The usual fixes are worth knowing, because some of them help. Moving the router out of a cupboard and into the open, more central in the house, often makes a real difference and costs nothing. Getting it up off the floor helps. What doesn't work nearly as well as people hope is a cheap range extender. It rebroadcasts a signal that's already weak, usually on a separate network name you have to switch between manually, and you end up with two mediocre networks instead of one good one.

What actually solves it is covering the house properly in the first place, rather than trying to push one router harder than it was built to go. That's what a mesh system does: several units spread through the home, working together as one network, so you're never far from a strong signal and your devices hand over between them without you noticing. No switching networks, no dead passage, no walking to the lounge to send a message.

It's worth explaining how the good systems actually pull this off, because it isn't simply "more routers". A modern pod doesn't just blast signal outwards in every direction and hope. It uses beamforming, which means the pod works out roughly where a device is and shapes the signal towards it instead of spraying it evenly around the room. Think of it as the difference between a bare bulb lighting a whole room dimly and a spotlight pointed where you actually need it. The same amount of power gets you a much stronger, cleaner connection at the far end, which is exactly what you want for the phone in the back bedroom.

The same trick works between the pods themselves, and this is where a proper mesh pulls away from a repeater. The SuperPods aren't only talking to your devices, they're talking to each other, carrying traffic across the house so it can reach the pod nearest you. That pod-to-pod traffic is the backhaul, and it's the part that makes or breaks a mesh network. Because the SuperPods are tri-band, they have an extra high-capacity 5GHz radio available beyond the bands your phones and laptops are using, so the pods can move data between themselves without fighting your devices for the same airspace. Plume decides how best to use those radios as conditions change, rather than permanently locking one away, so capacity goes where the house actually needs it at that moment. A cheap extender has none of this: it hears a weak signal and rebroadcasts it on the same band your devices are on, halving throughput in the process.

That's also why we ask for a bit of patience after an installation. Plume's Adapt feature spends the first while learning your home — which pods can hear each other and how well, where the interference is coming from, which channels are congested at seven in the evening, how your household actually moves around and uses the network. It then keeps tuning the topology and channel choices off the back of that. Give it at least 36 hours after a fresh install, or after you've moved a pod or added one, before you judge it. Wi-Fi on day one is Plume's opening guess; Wi-Fi on day three is Plume having worked your particular house out. That learning never really stops, which is why a well-placed Plume network tends to get better over time rather than slowly degrading the way a static setup does.
